PRESIDENT LUNGU DIRECTS FRA TO START BUYING CASSAV
President Edgar Lungu has directed the Food Reserve Agency-FRA- to start buying cassava to support farmers involved in the production of the crop.
The head of state says he is aware that a few players in the private sector are already buying the crop but that is not enough to stimulate commercial production of the crop.
Meanwhile, President Lungu has permitted the export of maize and mealie meal following the bumper harvest the country recorded this year.
The head of state says this will ensure that farmers earn foreign exchange from the sale of the crop to the neighboring countries that have presented a readily available market for farmers.
Speaking in Mansa, Luapula Province when he met traditional leaders, the head of state also stressed on the need for farmers across the country to consider venturing into production of other cash crops that will yield positive economic benefits such as soya beans.
