Ndola Catholic Diocese Bishop Right Reverend Dr. Benjamin Phiri has described His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu as a man for the poor people.
Bishop Phiri has said that President Lungu had demonstrated his desire to work for the vulnerable in society without seeking for selfish gain on return.
Speaking when Republican Vice-President Her Honour Mrs Inonge Mutukwa Wina paid a courtesy call on him at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Ndola last evening, Bishop Phiri said the Head of State was always there to look out for the needs of the less privileged.
“I have worked with President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and I have known him to be a man who is so passionate about the poor in society,” Bishop Phiri said. “We once worked on a project in Lumezi where the Head of State supported us without seeking for any form of publicity.”
The clergy man said when someone does that, someone was bound to know that he had a heart for the less privileged.
He said the church was currently building a school for boys from vulnerable backgrounds and President Lungu was supporting them all the way through.
“The church and the government are partners in development. The church supplement government efforts in health, education and other social services to the people,” Bishop Phiri said.
He said that was the reason why it had been maintained that the Catholic church would endeavor to work with the government of the day for the good of the people that theynwere serving.
And the clergy man has commended Her Honour the Vice-President and the ruling Patriotic Front government for championing peaceful causes ahead of the August 1w general elections.
“With regard to elections, it is our duty to preach peace every time. We need to encourage people to always be peaceful,” he said. “As a church we are very happy that you’re also speaking the same language of peace because it is important for us to cherish the peace.”
Bishop Phiri added that a look at other countries where there was strife can show how many innocent lives are perishing hence the need to maingain peace by all means.
Meanwhile, Mrs Wina has assured the church that PF would continue promoting a peaceful campaign period that would culminate into a peaceful, free and fair election.
Her Honour the Vice-President has also commended the church for the great works which they were doing in various sectors as they seek to complement government efforts in taking development closer to the less privileged.
Mrs Wina also presented PF Presidential running mate ahead of the August polls Professor Nkandu Luo to Bishop Phiri to seek for his blessings as she embarked on her new journey in the political space.
