SACCORD Statement on the Ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and President Lungu Appointing a Female Running Ma
The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) would like to join other stakeholders in congratulating and commending President Edgar Lungu for choosing a female running mate in Professor Nkandu Luo. Contrary to initial fears that one of the biggest political parties in the land and the ruling party of the nation would revert to having a male dominated system of both the President and the Vice President, the choice of a female running mate is welcome and commendable.
The appointment of Professor Nkandu Luo as the Vice President taking over from outgoing Vice President Ms Inonge Wina gives hope to every child in the nation that you can be anything in Zambia as long as you are able. The appointment of Professor Nkandu Luo whose career and achievements are a role model to any upcoming girl child re-affirms the priority given to the gender agenda to which Zambia has attached importance and is pursuing as part of her democratic dispensation. Furthermore, the appointment highlights the importance of inclusivity of women, who are the majority of the population, in the politics of the nation and thereby address one of the sources of conflict in the country.
As political parties continue with the filing in process we appeal for the continued consideration of women as potential running mates a practice that is transformational in Zambian politics where women participation is concerned. Congratulations to Professor Nkandu Luo for the appointment.
