PeP STATEMENT No.35 ISSUED ON FRIDAY, 7th MAY 2021: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
1. As Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) we wish to announce to the nation that this afternoon we commenced legal proceedings against the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in the High Court of Zambia to challenge their decision to compel Presidential Candidates to physically transport their supporters to ECZ offices, when the provisions of article 100(1)(j) of the Constitution can be adhered to by simply allowing presidential candidates to submit a list of their supporters per province.
2. As Patriots for Economic Progress we have always enjoyed very cordial relations with the Electoral Commission of Zambia and it is regrettable that this matter has had to go to litigation. However the irrational conduct of the Commission in this instance could not be allowed to go unchallenged. Before filing suit this afternoon we had engaged the Electoral Commission of Zambia through a letter dated 27th April 2021, with a view of possibly resolving the matter in an amicable way. However we have not been able to obtain any positive and firm feedback from the Commission. With time running out regarding the electoral calendar, we were left with no other option but to seek legal redress.
3. As Patriots for Economic Progress, we wish to reiterate that we are committed to participating in this year’s general elections and that is the reason why we were one of the first ones to pay the K95,000 presidential nomination fee to the Commission. To this end, we shall not entertain any direct or indirect obstacles that any individual and/or institution may try to throw on the way to our participation on 12th August 2021.
Thank You and May God Bless the Good Citizens of the Republic of Zambia and Our Ailing Nation.
